Ethical enlightenment is very important in Confucian ideal scheme of governing the country and pacifying the world. Because traditional Chinese laws, represented by the Qing Code, were deeply influenced by Confucianism, they accepted this idea and put it into the rule of household joint crime, which gave powers to the elders in family while imposing responsibilities on them. In Confucianism, the best method of enlightenment is "Li" and "Yue" (rather than punishment and politics). "Li" and "Yue" come from the people's hearts and conform to human nature, so they are conducive to preventing crimes and maintaining social order. When the rulers of various dynasties practiced this idea, they focused on the responsibilities of the elders in family while ignoring of their own greater responsibilities as the parents of their people, which reflected the rulers' selfish mentality. |
